The organization of CMHM grew out of several projects taken on by Dr. Candace Makeda Moore, MD. Dr. Moore had  been 3D printing model organs for sick children to help them better understand illness, and creating online code notebooks to help people understand computer programming related to medical images when she saw how her peculiar skills in some specific technologies could be applied more broadly.

Today CMHM is a collaboration with several organizations and individuals involved.
